In the diplomatic service from 1978 to 2016, Gabriele Checchia held, among other positions, those of Ambassador to NATO, Ambassador to the international organizations in Paris (OECD, ESA, IEA), and Ambassador to Beirut.
He also served as Special Envoy for Pakistan and Afghanistan from 2010 to 2011 and as diplomatic advisor to the Ministers of Productive Activities (2001–2006) and Defense (2011–2012).
He is currently President of the Strategic Committee of the Italian Atlantic Committee, Permanent Observer (Ambassador) of the Sovereign Order of Malta to the United Nations in Rome, Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, and recipient of the Ordre du Mérite Libanais.
